Our lightweight and transparent tracing paper and pads are perfect for creating precise copies of complex sketches, as well as designs for engineers and architects. Our Daler-Rowney Tracing Paper Pad comes in either A3 or A4 sizes, is acid free and strong enough to withstand repeated erasing. For larger projects, consider these sheets of A1 Tracing Paper from Gateway.

Tracing paper typically has low opacity and is semi-transparent, which means that light passes through it easily. Tracing paper is very simple to use and is often used with a light box to allow for exact sketches. When tracing with a light box, the original image or sketch is placed atop the lightbox, and then the tracing paper on top of this. The light below the image makes it much easier to see and trace using the paper. However in many cases you can place tracing paper directly over an original image and trace this way. Tracing paper can be used for any number of creative tasks, from professional sketches to crafts and artistic learning activities.

Graphite pencils are the best tools to use when working with tracing paper. You can shop our range of pencils for using with tracing paper and choose from great brands like Pentel, Faber-Castell and Staedtler

  • Watercolour Paper & Pads

If you are planning on working with watercolours, then you will need some quality watercolour paper to do your artwork justice. Traditional high quality watercolour paper is made from cotton fibres and sheets differ very little thanks to modern mould machines. Good watercolour paper is durable and absorbent thanks to the cotton fibres.  Most paper is white or cream in colour as it allows light to reflect off its surface, which gives the transparent watercolour paint a luminescent look. But this isn’t to say that all watercolour paper is the same.

What do different types of watercolour paper mean?

It’s important to choose the right paper, as it can affect the way your project turns out. Factors such as weight and watercolour paper texture can make a huge difference to your artwork, so it’s definitely worth doing your research. When it comes to types of watercolour paper textures, there are three main categories to concern yourself with:

    • Hot Pressed (HP): Hot pressed watercolour paper offers a very smooth surface, meaning that if you work with very fine detail, it will not be interrupted by rough textures.

    • Cold Pressed (CP): This type of watercolour paper is often known as “NOT”, to mean “not hot pressed”. Cold pressed watercolour paper has a surface which is slightly textured and it’s versatility means it’s a popular type.

    • Rough: Rough paper is a more textured type of watercolour paper, perfect for creating landscapes where texture adds to the composition.

In addition, different watercolour paper pads can have varying weights. Heavier paper is thicker, meaning it can take more water and more working as you create your watercolour masterpiece. Watercolour paper is typically marked by how much 500 sheets weighs. Typical weight margins are 90gsm, 140gsm, and 300gsm. While 90gsm is more inexpensive, it will not be able to handle rough work. 140gsm watercolour paper pads are the most common, balancing durability with price, while 300gsm paper is the toughest you will likely need for watercolour paper.

How to stop Watercolour paper from warping?

Watercolour paper is very absorbent, meaning the fibres expand as you paint on them with your watercolours. As only some areas of the page expand, the page begins to “cockle” or bend, particularly if you are using lighter GSM watercolour paper. If this is happening to your watercolour paintings, don’t worry, as this is a completely normal behaviour in watercolour paper. To ensure that your painting dries flat rather than in this buckled position, try the following tips.

    • Stretch your watercolour paper

    • Buy pre-stretched watercolour paper blocks

    • Flatten your finished watercolour artwork

Whether you are a professional or amateur, we have a range of watercolour paper and pads that are perfect for all purposes. We stock pads and sheets of watercolour paper from top brands such as Daler-Rowney, Winsor & Newton, Bockingford and more in a variety of types and sizes to suit your next project.

What paper do artists use?

It goes without saying that different artists will use different types of paper depending on their medium and style. Different paper has different textures which make it better for different fine art mediums. It also comes in different forms, with paper rolls and paper pads readily available, as well as different colours and textures.

It can seem simple, but the type of paper is an important decision in any artist’s process. It’s important, especially if you’re a beginner artist, to experiment with different types of paper and different art tools. This is the best way to find your favourite way of creating and, in turn, to create your best work.

What types of artist paper are there?

With so many types of fine art paper on the market, it can be daunting to know which to opt for. There are some factors that you should bear in mind when choosing your paper.

  • Weight - Different types of artist paper can have different weights, which are listed in pounds (lbs) or grammes per square metre (gsm). A range of 120gsm to 850gsm can be expected for most fine artist paper with a general rule of the heavier the paper, the thicker it is. Heavier paper can cope with more mark making and erasing, meaning that heavier weight paper (around 300gsm) is popular as drawing paper.

  • Grain - Fine art paper will have grain to the paper, which is created as the paper is made. Paper can be short or long grain, referring to whether the fibres are horizontal or vertical on the pages.

  • Tooth - The term ‘tooth’ is often used to describe the surface of the paper. The more tooth the paper has, the rougher the surface’s texture is, which is preferable for mediums like charcoal or pastels. Smoother papers are available for people looking for a smoother surface for their art.

  • Hot/Cold pressed - Cold pressed paper is popular among watercolour or drawing artists. When the paper is made, it is pressed a second time to flatten the texture a little, meaning that there is a little ‘interest’ in the surface but not huge amounts. Hot pressed paper is pressed again with a hot cylinder, meaning that it has a smoother and finer grain surface. For people who love finer detail, hot pressed paper is perfect.

What type of paper pad should I buy?

  • Drawing pads and sketchbooks: Art paper for drawing is typically thicker than normal cartridge paper to allow for more work with tools and erasers. The Daler-Rowney Fine Grain Drawing Pad is perfect for graphite and coloured pencils as well as charcoal. Artist sketch pads are good for keeping all your sketches in one place.

  • Watercolour paper: Artists using watercolours usually opt for a paper with a little texture, usually cold-pressed paper. With pads like the Faber-Castell Watercolour Pad, you can easily use watercolour paints or pencils to create your art.

  • Pastel paper pads: For mediums like pastels and charcoal, artists tend to use artist paper pads with more texture to create interesting effects with the softer medium. At Cowling & Wilcox, we offer many pastel paper pads, including the Winsor & Newton Tints Pastel Paper Pads with a range of textures and colours.

  • Acrylic paper: As acrylics are heavier than watercolour or pencil drawings, artist acrylic paper is typically of higher weight. A range of textures is offered to allow you to create your desired finish.

  • Mixed Media paper: To withstand a variety of mediums, mixed media paper is normally of higher durability for a range of wet and dry techniques. These Daler-Rowney Mixed Media Spiral Pads are suitable for a variety of media and drawing techniques.

  • Tracing Paper: For more technical uses or to create detailed and identical pieces of artwork, layout paper or tracing paper is an excellent choice. With this Daler-Rowney Layout Paper, you won’t have to compromise on price for quality paper.

Cowling & Wilcox also offer a range of sizes of each type of paper, allowing you to create large or small drawings or paintings or to create postcards or greetings cards. We also provide a range of craft papers, such as coloured card, crepe paper and artist tracing paper, to ensure you have everything you need while creating.
