What are System 3 Acrylic paints?

Produced by professional and respected colour-maker and artist supplier Daler-Rowney, System 3 Acrylics are high-quality acrylic paints that are popular among student-level artists. The consistency is soft, allowing more paint coverage with no visible brush strokes. They can be thinned with water for washes or used straight from the tube for stronger colours, and layers of this paint will dry to a glossy finish. The creamy, medium body viscosity of System 3 acrylics means that the paint is perfect for use on its own or in multi-medium compositions.

They are suitable for use on paper, wood and canvas, as well as many other interior uses. There is a great deal of range with this product, both in colour and in tube sizes, so that they will be great for any project you are working on.

Is System 3 acrylic paint good for professional use?

This range is known as a student-level acrylic due to the great painting experience it offers and its economical nature. It offers high-quality colour pigments, coverage and consistency at an affordable price. While there are more expensive and higher pigmented brands, such as Liquitex Professional or Golden, System 3 acrylics from Daler-Rowney are a great option for artists with lower budgets as well as professionals who use large quantities of paint.

Is System 3 acrylic paint waterproof?

As with other types of acrylic paint, when System 3 Acrylic paints are dry they are permanent and water-resistant. This means that the paint is resistant to water, but if left outside or used for exterior purposes without extra measures, the paint may become damaged. Layers can be painted over once dry without any colour bleeding to create deep and textured compositions.

How do I paint with System 3 Acrylic paints?

Daler-Rowney System 3 Acrylic paints can be used in the same way as any acrylic paint, which are fairly simple to use.

For a longer-lasting masterpiece, it’s a good idea to use a primer, like Gesso, on your acrylic pad or canvas. These paints can also be combined with acrylic mediums to alter the consistency and drying times of your paints. These acrylics from Daler-Rowney can take anywhere between 30 minutes and a few hours to dry, depending on the thickness of the paint and the conditions of the room. System 3 Acrylics can be watered down on a palette or straight from the tube to create coloured washes as a background for your artwork.

What brushes are best for System 3 Acrylic paints?

The brushes you use will depend on how you prefer to paint. Brushes that are best for acrylics are typically synthetic fibre brushes, as acrylics can often destroy sable brushes as they dry and harden. Acrylic brushes often experience more wear and tear, so synthetic brushes will last longer and have springier bristles than natural-hair bristles.

Daler-Rowney also produces a range of System 3 Acrylic brushes which would be perfect for use with these paints. The System 3 Acrylic brushes are short-handled brushes with synthetic filaments, meaning that they are resilient, flexible and affordable. They have soft, springy fibres that are great at retaining their shape after heavy use. Daler-Rowney supplies large sets of these brushes to supply you with every type of brush you might need.

You are also at liberty to use other tools to apply paint, including palette knives, like this RGM Scuola Wooden Handle Artist set, and more. Not watering down paint and applying it in thicker layers with a knife or wedge can create interesting textures and is worth experimenting within your own art.

How much System 3 acrylic paint do I need to buy?

How much paint you buy is entirely up to the artist. Some people prefer to buy large tubes of paint, like the Daler-Rowney System 3 Acrylic 500ml pots, for larger compositions or to save money by buying in bulk. If your painting style involves layering many thick layers of paint, it is a good idea to buy large amounts of paint to save you from running out or having to limit yourself during your painting process. Using a lot of acrylic paint will create more interesting textures in your art, especially if you use more robust brushes or palette knives to apply paint.

If you are working on a smaller or medium-sized composition, Daler-Rowney also offers much smaller tubes of paint, with either 59ml tubes and 150ml tubes. These are a great idea if you have a more subtle painting style. Your paint can still go a long way, as you can water down paint from the tube or on a palette to make it thinner. If you want to test out the System 3 Acrylics, purchasing the smaller tube options will allow you to try out the acrylics without wasting huge amounts of paint if it does not suit your art style.
