More details

Containing only high quality pigments, System 3 Acrylics give significantly greater loading than other acrylic ranges available in this class, and dry within minutes to an eggshell satin finish.

The comprehensive selection of 60 colours within the System 3 range ensures superb light-fastness*, permanence, durability and cover.

* With the exception of fluorescent colours. By nature, these pigments are classified as fugitive i.e. not lightfast.

  • High quality, medium body acrylic colour
  • Egg shell satin finish
  • Excellent lightfastness and durability

What is Acrylic paint?

Fast-drying and water based, Acrylic paint is comprised of a pigment suspended in an acrylic co-polymer binder. This is then applied to a support such as a canvas. The pigment fixes to the support upon evaporation of the water, producing a slight colour change in the process. Acrylic paint dries to a water-resistant, flexible finish, making it the ideal medium for a number of craft purposes including screen printing and model making.

All colours can be thinned with water to pale washes, or used directly from the pot or tube. The quick drying properties of the range enable the artist to work speedily, and a hairdryer may be used to further accelerate the drying process. Conversely, using System 3 Printing Medium retards the drying process, producing optimal results when screen printing. This video gives more information on using System 3 Original Acrylic for screen printing.

All System 3 Original and Heavy Body colours are fully intermixable and suitable for interior and exterior use, making them the perfect medium for all art and craft projects. Different textures and effects can be created with acrylic paints by adding gel, moulding paste, sand, rice, etc. This video shows the various Daler-Rowney media available for use with acrylic paint.

Once completed and dry, a thin layer of varnish may be applied, to protect and preserve artwork. Varnish is available in satin, matte and gloss finishes.

Acrylic paints are water-based, so brushes used to apply the paint need only mild soap and water to clean them after use. This video illustrates how simple it is to clean and care for acrylic paint brushes.

In what format is Acrylic paint available?

System 3 Original Acrylic is available in two tube sizes: 75ml aluminium tube with large screw cap or 150ml flexible plastic tube with flip top, for ease of use. System 3 Original Acrylic is also available in 250ml, 500ml and 2.25l pots.  The 250ml and 500ml sized wide-necked pots are soft, squeezable and stackable, with a flip-top lid which can also be unscrewed when larger quantities of paint are required.

Which surfaces best support Acrylic paint?

Daler-Rowney’s System 3 Acrylic Painting Pads, contain linen textured paper specifically designed for use with Daler-Rowney System 3 paints. However, its exceptional irregular textured surface offers ideal tooth for all acrylic colours on the market.

Incredibly versatile, System 3 Original Acrylic can be used on almost any semi-absorbent surface, including canvas, wood, fabric, ceramic bisque and cardboard.  In some cases, the surface may need to be first treated with a sealer.

Acrylic can even be painted onto a sheet of glass, and peeled off once dry.  This object can then be mounted as a free standing or hanging sculpture, or cut into pieces to make a mosaic.

Which brushes are best for Acrylic paint?

Specially developed for painting with acrylic colours, System 3 brushes  have synthetic soft filaments, good snap and perfect spring, making them ideal for acrylic painting. Acrylic paint may also be mixed and applied using palette knives.

Who are Daler-Rowney?

Established in 1783, by Richard and Thomas Rowney, Daler-Rowney has been manufacturing the finest art materials for over 230 years.

In 1963, Rowney became the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce artists' acrylic colour.  Widely used by artists, including well-known proponents Peter Blake and Bridget Riley, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rowney’s “Cryla” heralded a new era in art practice, which became known as ‘Pop Art’.

In 1983, the Daler Board Company purchased the George Rowney Company, forming Daler-Rowney Limited, as the company is known today.  Daler-Rowney now operates from three manufacturing bases, two in the UK and one in the Dominican Republic, where their artists' brushes are made.

Nice colour pigmentation in a easy to use, portable size. However if you don't clean the screw cap then sometimes the paint dries too hard making it difficult to take the cap off and you end up with splits in the tube.

System 3 is one of the better quality 'student' ranges if you can't afford a certain 'artists' quality paint which is extensively advertised but is horrendously expensive. Excellent value.
