In all areas of our lives, trends come and go. What is fashionable one year might not be popular the next. When it comes to art trends, this endless series of waves is even faster than one might expect. These change depending on what people are enjoying, which varies hugely between individuals. Art constantly demands new, and artists are constantly pushing the boundaries to create entirely unique styles, so it might be difficult to pinpoint what is trending in art in 2022.

We’re here to help. Whether you are looking to invest in some popular art, want to create something that is entirely on-trend, or are just curious about the art world right now, read on to discover some of the hottest 2022 art trends.

Nature & Environment

These themes have flooded through masterpieces over the past 2 years and show no sign of stopping. Artists have always drawn inspiration from the outside world and, while we were largely confined to our homes during the pandemic, many trending artists sought to bring the outside in during recent years. While ‘nature’ might conjure images of trees and plants in your mind, this isn’t all that this trend encompasses. Natural materials, earthy colour palettes, and common shapes in nature are also used to celebrate the outside in more subtle ways.

Furthermore, the modern awareness of the environment has contributed to this modern trend, with countless artists using their work to highlight issues of global pollution and fast fashion. Organic and eco-friendly materials are also popular, making this a great way to create new art.

Digital Art

Technology is playing a bigger and bigger role in all of our lives, so it’s no surprise that digital art is thriving in 2022. Working from home and being deprived of outdoor space meant that technology was often the only place to turn for artists. And with the arrival of NFTs, it’s easier than ever to make money from 3D art or digital motion graphics. What’s more, digital outdoor exhibits are also thriving, using existing structures to create fascinating images and impressions through light shows and projectors. Digital art exhibitions are also on the rise, creating a wholly new and more accessible way to display globally revered art.

Street Art

Over the past decade, street art has been lifted from buildings and train tracks and into the spotlight of art galleries. This is expected to continue into this year and beyond. Street artists, like Banksy and Eduardo Kobra, are quickly becoming household names with their vibrance and ability to capture the sentiments of a nation. This medium, typically using spray paints, creates a strong message through quick and expressive artwork. Throughout the pandemic, works of street art became an extremely accessible form of artwork, and the street art trend is showing no signs of slowing down.
