More Information

Made from high quality, primed heavy cotton, our 12oz Natural Primed Cotton Canvas is tightly woven, yet effortlessly stretched, making it ideal for mounting to bespoke canvas frames.

What Is Canvas?

Traditionally manufactured from hemp, for its tough fibres, Canvas is now primarily produced from either linen or cotton. Cotton Canvas offers an inexpensive alternative to Linen Canvas, which has finer strands, producing a highly intricate weave, with a regular pattern. Differing from other heavy cotton fabrics, having a plain rather than twill weave, cotton canvas is available in plain and duck varieties. The threads in Cotton Duck Canvas are more tightly woven than classic cotton canvas, providing better surface tension and an ideal support when painting with oil colour.

This video discusses The Differences Between Cotton Duck And Linen.

How do I choose a Canvas?

Canvas is graded according to weight and tightness of weave. Ranging from 1 to 15oz, a low number indicates a coarse grain, whereas the finest grains are represented by the highest numbers. Often, canvas is simply graded as “Coarse”, “Medium” and “Fine”.

Why choose 12oz Natural Primed Cotton Canvas?

Affordable and easily stretched, 12oz Natural Primed Cotton Canvas has the substance to withstand heavy painting, and may be used with all media, including Oil Paint, Acrylic Colour and Gouache.

This treated canvas can be mounted onto custom-made frames. As it is pre-primed there is no need to add a Primer. However, some artists prefer to add their own in order to create a less porous surface.

So far so good, unrolled it and the sellotape holding it together pulled away some of the treatment on the canvas but pulled it out enough to bypass the damaged bit.
