Daler-Rowney’s Ebony Hardback Sketchbooks are stylish and versatile, giving you excellent quality at a low price. The tough black cover keeps your work safe, so they’re perfect for taking out and about with you. The paper inside Daler-Rowney’s Ebony Hardback Sketchbooks is smooth, 160gsm cartridge paper, which is acid-free so won’t yellow with age. You’ll find it ideal for drawing and sketching in graphite, coloured pencils or charcoals.

Available in sizes A3, A4, A5, A6, 148 x 130mm and 265 x 210mm, the Ebony Sketchbook contains 62 sheets in all sizes except A3, which has 48 sheets. Fantastic value for money.

Who are Daler-Rowney?

Established in 1783, by Richard and Thomas Rowney, Daler-Rowney has been manufacturing the finest art materials for over 230 years.

In 1963, Rowney became the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce artists' acrylic colour.  Widely used by artists, including well-known proponents Peter Blake and Bridget Riley, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rowney’s “Cryla” heralded a new era in art practice, which became known as ‘Pop Art’.

In 1983, the Daler Board Company purchased the George Rowney Company, forming Daler-Rowney Limited, as the company is known today.  Daler-Rowney now operates from three manufacturing bases, two in the UK and one in the Dominican Republic, where their artists' brushes are made.

I think these sketchbooks are good value for money. Great paper for sketching with coloured pencils or will take a light wash of watercolours. I have several books in different sizes.

These sketchbooks (I always get the A5 portrait) make perfect travelling journals/sketchbooks. I use mine to write, sketch and collage in, attaching in postcards, receipts, leaflets etc that I acquire over my summer. The hardback means you can work anywhere, and that it doesn't become tatty. The thickness of the paper means that you can get away with painting and it doesn't warp too badly, and that you can stick things down easily. I like that it is slightly more creamy than a bright white as well.

Aesthetically pleasing -- a nice chunky object -- for a sketchbook junky. Makes you want to get to work immediately...
