What Is Canvas?

Traditionally manufactured from hemp, for its tough fibres, Canvas is now primarily produced from either linen or cotton. Cotton Canvas offers an inexpensive alternative to Linen Canvas, which has finer strands, producing a highly intricate weave, with a regular pattern.  Cotton Duck Canvas is most commonly used for painting with oil colour.

How do I choose a Canvas?

Canvas is graded according to weight and tightness of weave. Ranging from 1 to 12, a low number indicates a coarse grain, whereas the finest grains are represented by the highest numbers. Often, canvas is simply graded as “Coarse”, “Medium” and “Fine”.

Why Choose Reeves Mini Canvases?

Great for fun craft projects, Reeves Mini Canvases are ideal for a number of artistic creations, including miniature paintings, interior design and decorations – the only limit is your imagination! These mini canvases can be displayed on Reeves Mini Easels.

Who are Reeves?

Established in 1766 by William Reeves, to manufacture and sell his own paints, the business flourished quickly, enabling William to take into partnership his older brother, Thomas. A family orientated business, more members continued to join the company, helping to give Reeves the quality reputation it maintains today. However, it was the development and successful marketing of their Moist Watercolour Paint-Cake in 1781, which placed Reeves at the forefront of manufacturing artists’ materials.

Expansion into foreign markets grew, thanks to military connections and the shipment of supplies to officers stationed in India. This was followed by diversification into affordable art materials for schools and beginners, a line which thrived upon the introduction of the Education Act in 1870.

Today, Reeves continues to manufacture a range of innovative products for artists, crafters and children.
