What Is Canvas?

Traditionally manufactured from hemp, for its tough fibres, Canvas is now primarily produced from either linen or cotton. Cotton Canvas provides an inexpensive alternative to Linen Canvas which has finer strands, producing a highly intricate weave. Cotton Duck Canvas is most commonly used for painting with oil colour.

How do I choose a Canvas?

Canvas is graded according to weight and tightness of weave. Ranging from 1 to 12, a low number indicates a coarse grain, whereas the finest grains are represented by the highest numbers. Often, canvas is simply graded as “Coarse”, “Medium” and “Fine”.

Why choose Winsor & Newton Artist Canvas Square?

The triple primed, medium grain surface of Winsor & Newton’s Artist Canvas prevents the sinking of oil colour, and supports all media, including Oil Paint, Acrylic Colour and Gouache. Like every canvas in the Winsor & Newton range, this stretched canvas is supplied with corner wedges, to achieve extra tension if required.

This Winsor & Newton guide shows How To Fit Canvas Wedges.

Who are Winsor & Newton?

In 1832, William Winsor and Henry Newton introduced the first moist water colours to the world. Today, Winsor and Newton remain the premier choice for artists, offering a wide variety of fine art supplies including: oil, water colour, acrylic and alkyd paints, pastels, artists' brushes, canvases, papers and portfolios.

These are good for this size. The stretcher bars are suitable for a small canvas, which is primed decently and ready to use.

Amazingly sturdy and well stretched especially for a large canvas. Corner stretchers not correct size - too loose - hence the loss of 1 star

Amazing price for these 2 really large canvases, I always get my canvas from Coeling and Wilcox and in the 15 years I've been painting I've never had a damaged one yet!!!

The delivery was ok but there were shoe marks over the package and the canvases had little dents in them and slightly warped but I managed to use them anyway .

Arrived packed in one box. Although I would have preferred the canvasses on the outer sides to face inwards, I'm glad to say the surfaces remained undamaged.
