Galeria Acrylic Colour from Winsor & Newton is a high-quality acrylic that delivers professional results at an affordable price. It’s popular with painters the world over, from students to experienced artists.
Galeria is primarily thought of as a student-grade paint. It offers excellent colour strength and works easily, although you’ll have to add texture paste if you want thick paint as it’s quite soft.
All of the 60 colours in the range offer a wide spectrum of pigment characteristics to choose from as well as excellent brilliance of colour, high levels of pigment strength, opacity & permanence, strong brush stroke retention, clean colour and a smooth, satin finish.
Why choose acrylic?
Acrylics were originally created as an alternative to oil paints back in the 1960s. They offer a much faster drying time than oils, have a creamy thick consistency, are water-based and are typically non-toxic. All acrylic colours can be thinned with water to create pale washes, or applied directly from the tube. The polymer binders used in acrylic means that you can achieve results quickly, layer up colours and cover mistakes in the time it takes for your work to dry.
There are two main types of acrylic – Student quality and Artists quality. The main difference between them is the pigments within them – colours that feature the word ‘Hue’ are usually imitation pigments. The key to good colour mixing is to make sure that you have good quality blues, yellows and reds, as these combined will create less muddy colours.
Over the years, some hues have had to replace pigments as they contained toxic elements such as lead. Most acrylics have a higher permanence (lightfastness) than oils or watercolour. This means they fade and age much slower in direct sunlight.
What makes Galeria great?
Although Galeria Acrylics are typically referred to as Student quality, their high pigment levels deliver professional results with significantly better covering power than many similarly priced brands.
Galeria Acrylic Colours are fully intermixable and suitable for interior and exterior use, making them ideal for a wide range of art and craft projects. You can change the working properties of your paint, creating different textures and effects, by adding one or more Galeria Mediums. These offer you infinite scope for creativity.
Winsor & Newton manufacture Galeria with high levels of pigment and also offer opaque versions of some naturally transparent colours. You’ll find their texture buttery enough for quick and easy coverage, but thick enough for brush marks.
The lower viscosity of Galeria means that colours are more fluid to use and move around your canvas. If you want to create more impasto effects that retain your paint peaks we recommend that you use a Heavy Structure Gel.
We have a wide array of customers that regularly use Galeria, including students, hobbyists, muralists, decorative painters, and fine artists that work on large scale projects. They’re easy to mix and use, especially for beginners. When diluted they are suitable for a wide variety of techniques including stenciling, collage, sponging, airbrushing, and more.
Galeria also offers excellent adhesion on a wide variety of properly prepared surfaces, including paper, canvas, leather, fabric, hardboard, wood, brick, and plaster.
Making the most of Galeria
Once your artwork is completed and dry, we recommend adding a thin layer of varnish to protect and preserve it in the long term. Varnish is available in satin, matt and gloss finishes, depending on your personal preference
Drying time all depends on how much paint you use, so a thin film of colour can dry in 10-15 minutes where a thicker layer could be half an hour and a very thick layer could take up to an hour.
