Our featured artist this time around is Pauline Joseph, an incredibly talented & varied artist that works in a broad variety of both mediums & styles, for some truly unique works inspired by the masters of old. We caught up with Pauline to find out just what makes them tick.
What inspires you & your work?
I am inspired by the past and human emotions, whether it's loneliness or melancholy. It’s a reflection of my life growing up as I had a very unhappy childhood. Art was a way to express and to feel my emotions.
I also love classical paintings the passion for the works of great artists spoke to me.

You started with Disney cartoons at age 6, is that right?
Any particular favourites?
At the age of 6, I started to teach myself to draw Disney characters, my favourites were Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and The Aristocats. Watching cartoons made me feel happy so that’s why I drew them and I got to understand form and shape at an early age.
Your work can range from Manga to the Old Masters, why so eclectic?
I feel that there are so many wonderful genres of art that I can’t just do one style forever and I get to indulge in other mediums too. I like to challenge my skills, as I see myself as a student of my craft, open to new ideas working on developing and growing.
At the moment, I'm learning to paint Byzantine icons using egg tempera.

How long, on average, would you say each piece takes?
On average, a miniature painting of around 9 x 10cm could take up to a month, whereas my larger pieces of around 60 x 80cm & icons at 30 x 20cm can take anywhere between 3-6 months as I prefer to take my time & add detail to my work.
How would you describe your creative space?
My creative space is at home, affording me the opportunity to work any day & any time. It's cosy and organised, featuring oils, pigments, art books, brushes and more, with the large windows providing an abundance of natural light, which I love to work with.

Do you have any helpful hints or tips for other creatives out there?
Follow your passion & what makes you excited, always make stuff you love & be yourself. Experiment with different mediums & seek inspiration not just in art galleries & museums, but places typically not considered "art related". And finally, enjoy the creative process!
And where can we find you or your work online?
