What is a Medium?

Any liquid which changes the consistency of the paint it is mixed with may be classed as a medium. Artistic style and technique influence the choice of medium used, so Winsor & Newton provide a wide range of traditional oils and mediums to help control Oil Colour, as well as varnishes to protect work and provide a final finish.

Why use a Medium?

Choosing complementary oils, mediums and varnishes for oil colours is as unique as choosing a colour palette. By changing the properties of paint, a medium extends the possibilities of how an artist works with the colour, and affords a plethora of exciting techniques and effects.

Winsor & Newton Mediums Finder provides an easy, interactive method of choosing the correct medium, for the artist to achieve the desired effect.

Why choose Winsor & Newton Liquin Fine?

The most fluid of the Liquin Family of products, Winsor & Newton Liquin Fine is available in 75ml and 500ml sizes. This medium prevents colour yellowing and reduces the drying time of oil colours by 50%, leaving paint touch-dry in 1 to 6 days, depending on thickness. It should be noted that Liquin Fine is not suitable for use as a varnish or final coat.

I haven't used this yet but I am hoping to use it to apply thin, transparent layers of colour to parts of my paintings, because it is fast-drying.
