Founded in 1863 by Carl Brevillier with a goal to make high-quality writing & artistic implements accessible to the larger public. Largely handmade & of poor quality at the time, Carl sought to provide the average person with the means of true expression, ultimately leading to the development of the modern Brevillier pencil.
Continuing the tradition of this historic brand under the CRETACOLOR, Hans Wolfgang Hromatka (an avid collector of older pencils) purchased the Hirm pencil factory in 1996, combining his passion with his field of work. Since the end of the 1990s CRETACOLOR has gradually grown into one of the premium brands of art-quality materials across the globe.
Finally, with the takover of Brevillier-Urban in 2008, Hans acquired the technical know-how to produce artists' pencil much more efficiently. After this, the Brevillier Urban & Sachs company was born & the Brevillier name was intregrated into the CRETACOLOR logo by Hans' request.
