What is System 3 Acrylic Paint?

Video: Daler-Rowney System 3 Acrylic Range

First produced in the early Sixties, Acrylic Paint is still considered to be the new painting medium. Introduced in 1987, Daler-Rowney’s System 3 Acrylic Paints offer an excellent painting experience at an affordable price without compromising on quality, making them perfect for all- from students to professionals. These paints are available in both standard System 3 and Heavy Body forms.

Containing only high-quality pigments, System 3 Acrylics give significantly greater loading than other acrylic ranges available in this class, and dry within minutes to an eggshell satin finish.

The comprehensive selection of 60 colours within the System 3 range ensures superb light-fastness*, permanence, durability and cover.

*With the exception of fluorescent colours. By nature, these pigments are classified as fugitive i.e. not lightfast.

What is Acrylic paint?

Fast-drying and water-based, Acrylic paint is comprised of a pigment suspended in an acrylic co-polymer binder. This is then applied to a support such as a canvas. The pigment fixes to the support upon evaporation of the water, producing a slight colour change in the process. Acrylic paint dries to a water-resistant, flexible finish, making it the ideal medium for a number of craft purposes including screen printing and model making.

All colours can be thinned with water to pale washes or used directly from the pot or tube. The quick-drying properties of the range enable the artist to work speedily, and a hairdryer may be used to further accelerate the drying process. Conversely, using System 3 Printing Medium retards the drying process, producing optimal results when screen printing. This video gives more information on using System 3 Acrylic for screen printing.

All System 3 and Heavy Body colours are fully inter-mixable and suitable for interior and exterior use, making them the perfect medium for all art and craft projects. Different textures and effects can be created with acrylic paints by adding gel, moulding paste, sand, rice, etc. This video shows the various Daler-Rowney media available for use with acrylic paint.

Once completed and dry, a thin layer of varnish may be applied, to protect and preserve the artwork. The varnish is available in satin, matte and gloss finishes.

Acrylic paints are water-based, so brushes used to apply the paint need only mild soap and water to clean them after use. This video illustrates how simple it is to clean and care for acrylic paintbrushes.

In what format is Acrylic paint available?

System 3 Acrylic paint tubes are available in two sizes: 59ml aluminium tube with large screw cap or 150ml flexible plastic tube with a flip-top, for ease of use and higher accuracy while dispensing. System 3 Acrylic is also available in 250ml, 500ml and 2.25l pots. The 250ml and 500ml sized wide-necked pots are soft, squeezable and stackable, with a flip-top lid which can also be unscrewed when larger quantities of paint are required.

Which surfaces best support Acrylic paint?

Daler-Rowney’s System 3 Acrylic Painting Pads contain linen textured paper specifically designed for use with Daler-Rowney System 3 paints. However, its exceptional irregular textured surface offers an ideal tooth for all acrylic colours on the market.

Incredibly versatile, System 3 Acrylic can be used on almost any semi-absorbent surface, including canvas, wood, fabric, ceramic bisque and cardboard. In some cases, the surface may need to be first treated with a sealer.

Acrylic can even be painted onto a sheet of glass and peeled off once dry. This object can then be mounted as a free-standing or hanging sculpture, or cut into pieces to make a mosaic.

Which applications are best for Acrylic paint?

Specially developed for painting with acrylic colours, System 3 brushes have synthetic soft filaments, good snap and perfect spring, making them ideal for acrylic painting. However, Acrylic paint is extremely versatile and may also be mixed and applied using palette knives, markers and airbrushes.

Who are Daler-Rowney?

Established in 1783, by Richard and Thomas Rowney, Daler-Rowney has been manufacturing the finest art materials for over 230 years.

In 1963, Rowney became the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce artists' acrylic colour.  Widely used by artists, including well-known proponents Peter Blake and Bridget Riley, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rowney’s “Cryla” heralded a new era in art practice, which became known as ‘Pop Art’.

In 1983, the Daler Board Company purchased the George Rowney Company, forming Daler-Rowney Limited, as the company is known today.  Daler-Rowney now operates from three manufacturing bases, two in the UK and one in the Dominican Republic, where their artists' brushes are made.
