More Information

Formulated to enhance the creations of artists working with Oil and Acrylic Colour, Daler-Rowney White Gesso Primer is an excellent base coat primer, suitable for preparing all semi-absorbent surfaces prior to the application of paint. A unique formulation, needing no dilution, White Gesso Primer is easy to apply and highly adhesive.

What is Gesso?

Traditionally comprising of a binder, pigment and chalk or gypsum, Gesso is a base layer applied to canvas or other substrates, prior to painting. With an increased flexibility and archival life, modern gesso is a combination of chalk and pigment in an acrylic polymer medium.

Why use Gesso?

Providing better adhesion by adding tooth to the surface, priming with gesso also prevents paint soaking into the support, and adds a strengthening foundation, allowing application of heavier media.

Why choose Daler-Rowney White Gesso Primer?

Suitable for both interior and exterior applications, Daler-Rowney White Gesso Primer dries quickly to produce a matt white surface with a slight tooth, easily sanded for highly detailed work.

Who are Daler-Rowney?

Established in 1783, by Richard and Thomas Rowney, Daler-Rowney has been manufacturing the finest art materials for over 230 years.

In 1963, Rowney became the first manufacturer in Europe to introduce artists' acrylic colour.  Widely used by artists, including well-known proponents Peter Blake and Bridget Riley, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rowney’s “Cryla” heralded a new era in art practice, which became known as ‘Pop Art’.

In 1983, the Daler Board Company purchased the George Rowney Company, forming Daler-Rowney Limited, as the company is known today.  Daler-Rowney now operates from three manufacturing bases, two in the UK and one in the Dominican Republic.

This is the graduate gesso and not an artist/professional product: this should have been made clear on the website. For graduate quality it is perfectly fine

Primer was fine - it was the lack of delivery that was the problem

A gesso with a good tooth. I've sanded mine down as want the surface to be as smooth as possible, and it hasn't disappointed. Also a good consistency, not too thin.
