Sennelier are a French brand that began in the late 19th century under Gustave Sennelier. It was a hobby of his to collect pigments and binders from all across Europe and then to mix them back in his shop in Paris, where he soon attracted the most demanding of customers, including Cézanne, Gauguin, Soutine and Van Gogh. Gustave was a master colour maker but it was his son Henri who, was tasked by Pablo Picasso with creating a vehicle for colours that could be applied direct to a range of surfaces, and came up with the first oil pastel. Although Sennelier continues to make watercolours, acrylics, gouache and more, these creamy-textured, highly pigmented pastels remain the company’s lasting legacy, as anyone who has used them will understand.
