This week, our featured artist is Katherine Griffin, who won a prize for life drawing in 2000. She tells us about her inspiration, art essentials and love for surrealism. We asked her about her work, her inspiration and portfolios among other things.
Tell us a bit about your previous work
I studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London where I won the prize for life drawing in 2000 judged by Paula Rego. I now live and work in Brighton. I undertake private commissions and exhibit work nationally. I have painted murals and street art for clients such as Natural England, TEDX, Brighton City Council and the Onca Gallery and art pieces for festivals such as Glastonbury, The Secret Garden Party, Playgroup, the Rollright Fayre, the Electric Picnic and the Fire Gathering festival.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by colour, pattern and nature with a love for surrealism and hidden symbolism.

What portfolio do you suggest?
Portfolios are a matter of preference but I’d suggest something comfortable to carry, with the option of a shoulder strap and removable sleeves,

Tips for Preparing a Portfolio
Aim to choose pieces that best represent you and your work and present them in a neat and organised way; mounting and backing pieces. Photograph any 3d work and annotate all work clearly. You don’t have to show work chronologically but start and end with your strongest pieces and consider any narrative or development you wish to have running through your portfolio. If you have a very strong style try to show variation within that style and if you are eclectic then aim to show some consistency.
How do you spend your weekends?
I like to spend weekends walking in the countryside, riding my bike, drawing, taking photographs and dancing with friends.
